What is UpToMed?
UpToMed is an offline application for accessing UpToDate content and serves as an affordable mirror of the original UpToDate software (the original UpToDate software costs approximately $500). In this version, we provide topics offline, while search and some tools still require an internet connection.
When you are connected
Use Online Mode to access the online service. An internet connection is needed for online content and database downloads.
When you are offline
First, download the database while online. You can then browse, open, and read topics without an internet connection. Search requires internet access; browsing topics does not.
How do I install UpToMed on Windows?
Get the Windows installer
The installer is available on the dedicated UpToMed page on LiBook.
Open the setup file
Run the downloaded .exe file and follow the installation prompts. Once installation is complete, open UpToMed.
What if Windows displays “Windows protected your PC”?
The screenshot shows a SmartScreen warning for an unrecognized app and an Unknown publisher. Verify that the installer came from the intended UpToMed source before continuing.
How do I search for and open a topic?
- Connect to the internet, open UpToMed, and use the Setting menu to select Online Mode. Search requires an internet connection.
- Enter a clinical term or topic title in the main search field, for example hypertension.
- Submit your search using the search icon, then select the relevant topic from the results.
How do I download the database and work offline?
Connect to the internet
Keep your computer connected during the initial database download. Make sure there is enough free disk space for the download and installation.
Start the database download
Open the following menu and follow the app’s prompts.
Wait until the database is ready
Allow the download and any installation steps to finish. Check the database status in the same submenu before switching modes.
Switch to Offline Mode and test access
Select Setting → Offline Mode. Disconnect from the internet, browse to a topic, and confirm that it opens. (Search requires internet access; browsing does not.)
When is the content updated, and how do I check?
We are making the application more user-friendly. When you open the application, you will usually be notified if a new version is available. You can also use the Setting and Help menus to check for updates.
| What you want to update | Where to go | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Offline topic database | Setting → UpToDate database → Check for database updates | Check whether a database update is available. Follow the app’s prompts; use Update offline database… when available. |
| UpToMed application | Help → Check for updates… | Check for a new version of the Windows application. This is separate from updating topic content. |
Which controls are useful during everyday use?
| Action | Menu / shortcut |
|---|---|
| Return to the previous page | File → Back · Alt + Left Arrow |
| Reload the current page | File → Reload · Ctrl + Shift + R |
| Print the current page | File → Print · Ctrl + P |
| Start the sign-in process again | File → Re-sign in |
| Close the application | File → Exit |
What should I do if something does not work?
Why can’t I open topics without the internet?
Check that the database download finished and that Setting → Offline Mode is selected. Try another topic to determine whether the issue affects one topic or the whole database. If it persists, reconnect and inspect the database status and available updates.
What if the download fails or stops?
Check your internet connection and available disk space, then restart the database download from the Setting menu. If the issue continues, report the problem from Help.
Why is “Update offline database…” unavailable?
The command is available only when an update has been found for the installed database. Check the database status and try Check for database updates again while connected to the internet.
What should I try if a page is blank or unresponsive?
Reload the page first. If the problem remains, close and reopen the application, then check your connection and report the problem from Help if needed.
What if I need to sign in again?
Use File → Re-sign in and complete the sign-in process again. Keep the application open until the process is complete.
How do I report a problem?
Open Help → Report a problem and include the steps that led to the issue, the affected topic or screen, and any message you saw.
Is UpToMed an official UpToDate application?
No. UpToMed is an independent application that provides access to selected content and is not an official UpToDate application.
What features are planned for future versions of UpToMed?
A fully online version of UpToMed for Android is now available. To download it, go to the top section of this page and click the Android icon.
For future versions of the application, we plan to develop versions compatible with other operating systems, including Mac and iOS. We also need to add offline functionality to the Android version.
We also plan to add offline search to the application, so that in addition to browsing topics, you can find the information you need without an internet connection.
